    What We're Looking For

The Associate Chaplain, Director for Chapel and Campus Ministries is responsible for leading the oldest tradition and most visible ministry at Baylor, as well as nurturing other campus ministries as they engage students intentionally in discipleship. By developing Chapel experiences that meet students where they are and by connecting students to communities of discipleship, the Director of Chapel and Campus Ministries will significantly impact the spiritual formation of Baylor students and nurture the vibrancy of Christian faith at our University. This position will operate primarily on campus and will serve in person.

This passionate and effective leader will be an experienced minister with an understanding of and familiarity with the Baptist tradition.  Although general pastoral experience and skills will be necessary and important, gifts and expertise in administration and leadership will be essential to the success of the Director of Chapel and Campus Ministries.  The Director typically supervises three fulltime employees as well as several graduate students.

    Required Qualifications:

    1.        Masters in Christian Ministry or Theology.

    2.        Ten years of fulltime ministerial experience.

    3.        Experience leading and supervising staff.

    4.        Experience in and a mature understanding of Christian spiritual formation and worship.

    5.        Experience with and understanding of emerging adults, their culture and spiritual needs.

    6.         An understanding and appreciation of Baylor’s Baptist heritage as well as the capacity to work in a denominationally diverse context.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1.        Masters of Divinity and/or doctoral work

    2.        Fifteen years of fulltime ministerial experience with at least 5 years in a higher education context.

    3.        Experience in collegiate student life related work.

    What You Will Do

    Specific duties include:

    • Lead a staff team that will plan and facilitate Chapel experiences designed to introduce students to and engage them with Christian faith and practice, which includes nurturing the connections between students and various communities and opportunities for spiritual growth on our campus and beyond.
    • As a strategic and pastoral leader, create encounters that nurture student connections to God, to one another, to communities of intentional discipleship, to a thoughtful faith, to a vocational vision, and to an abundant life in Christ.
    • Lead a staff team that works fluidly and efficiently with Baylor’s administrative processes in order to maintain the excellence and impact of Baylor Chapel and other campus ministries.
    • Function as a chaplain on the Spiritual Life staff, ministering with this team to the needs of the Baylor community, including being available for pastoral care, teaching, worship leadership, and speaking with the various university constituencies.

The scope of the Associate Chaplain position includes oversight of Baylor Chapel.  Chapel has played a historic role throughout the years, symbolizing and manifesting our Christian heritage and mission. Maintaining Chapel as a part of the curriculum has always been a priority for Baylor, allowing it to evolve through the decades in response to a changing world and a changing, growing student body.  Currently, the vision for Chapel is broadening as we seek to provide more choice and different Chapel experiences for students with different needs, interests, and vocations.  This vision is currently reflected through Chapel offerings in these four categories: Chapel Online, Chapel Worship, Chapel Prayers, and Chapel Studies. Students are required to have two Chapel credits in order to graduate from Baylor.

This ministry will impact around 4000 students each semester and will involve extensive partnerships with other staff, faculty, and many in the larger Baylor community and beyond.  Though primarily and directly engaging our newer students, Chapel has a reach that extends well beyond the incoming undergraduate class and even the campus community to the larger Baylor family.

Chapel experiences have as a priority helping new students to begin a good journey of faith at Baylor, which includes seeking to nurture them into the practice of authentic Christian community.  The Director of Chapel and Campus Ministries will work with others to help Baylor student religious organizations thrive and to guide students towards these and other communities of intentional discipleship where they will find support, belonging, and spiritual growth.
